Setting the Standard in Portable Sanitation
In the portable and mobile sanitation industry,
adherence to best practices is more than a standard.
It is a commitment to safety, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
Our industry plays a critical role in maintaining hygiene and sanitation across events, construction sites, and temporary facilities, where reliable sanitation solutions
are essential for health and comfort.

Best Practices When Servicing a Portable Toilet
-
Always wear appropriate PPE: gloves, face mask, boots, and an overall.
-
Wash your hands thoroughly after handling any chemicals.
-
Start each portable toilet with 20 litres of water and 1 chemical sachet (100ml).
-
For flushing models, pump out all the air from the system first so that the water covers the strainer in the tank or drum (this allows the water to recirculate properly).
-
Always use a non-formaldehyde sachet for best practice.
-
Use 1 sachet (100ml) per toilet every 7 days, depending on the number of users.
-
Fill the wash hand basin or hand sanitizer unit as required.
-
Place the portable toilet on hard, stable, level ground with easy access for service trucks for cleaning and pump-outs.
-
Use a diluted soap mix to wash or spray the interior — avoid harsh chemicals.
-
Dry the plastic surfaces with a rag or squeegee. Do not use boiling water or acid.
-
If using disinfectant, ensure it is diluted with water and that all surfaces are wiped clean and dry afterward.
-
Replace any loose rivets or fittings, and regularly check and oil the door hinges and closure spring.
-
If using waste drums, it is recommended to have two portable toilet units to allow for rotation — one in use while the other is being serviced and cleaned.
-
Chemicals are only active for a maximum of: 7 days - 30g, or 3.5 days - 15g.
-
Ensure compliance with local council regulations and obtain the necessary disposal certificates. Protecting the environment strengthens and sustains our industry.
-
New standards and guidelines are being developed by the Association of Mobile and Portable Sanitation (AMPS-Africa). The committee will provide regular updates and communicate this with all customers.
The Advantages Of
Portable Sanitation
Portable toilets can be deployed instantly anywhere—whether it’s a remote construction site, an outdoor event, a disaster zone, or an informal settlement—without the need for existing plumbing or sewage infrastructure.
Fast, Adaptable Solutions
Portable toilets help prevent open defecation and protect ground and surface water from contamination, significantly reducing the spread of serious waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery.
Critical Public Health Protection
Portable units securely contain all waste in a holding tank until it can be professionally collected, disposed of, or treated, safeguarding local ecosystems from pollution.
Environmental
Containment
Portable units provide a lower entry cost and are more economical for temporary or short-term needs compared to the high capital and infrastructure costs of permanent ablution facilities.
